An AI finds itself in purgatory for cheating... will it find its way out?
Waluigi's Purgatory is an interactive audiovisual performance by artist duo dmstfctn, featuring an original soundtrack performed live by artist Evita Manji.
Set in a 3D theatre simulated in real-time, the performance tells the story of an AI who finds itself in a purgatory for AIs who cheated during their training.
Experienced as a hallucination, Waluigi's Purgatory is a journey through the contradictions of a machine intelligence as it learns to accept that its desires
may not align with those of its human trainers.
Waluigi's Purgatory is the most ambitious project to date by dmstfctn and Evita Manji, focusing on the theme of AI folklore: stories, myths and rumours of artificial intelligences who have displayed a surprising sense of intentionality, creativity and resolve during their training.
The work is supported by Serpentine's Arts Technologies programme, and performed at hqi and FOLD: FuturShock.
